Instructions

  1. Cook the bacon
Arrange the bacon slices in a single layer in a large skillet. Cook over medium heat, turning occasionally, until the bacon is crispy and browned, about 6-8 minutes. Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess fat.
  2. Toast the bread
Lightly butter one side of each bread slice. In a clean skillet or toaster, toast the bread until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes per side if using a skillet. Set aside to cool slightly.
  3. Prepare the tomatoes
Slice the tomato into 1/4-inch thick rounds. Season with a pinch of salt and pepper. Place on a paper towel to remove excess moisture.
  4. Assemble the sandwich
Spread mayonnaise evenly on one side of each piece of toasted bread. If using Dijon mustard, spread it on the opposite pieces. Layer the bottom slice with lettuce leaves, followed by 2-3 tomato slices, and then 4 slices of bacon. Add avocado slices if using. Top with the second piece of bread, mayonnaise side down.
  5. Cut and serve
Using a sharp knife, cut each sandwich diagonally and serve immediately while the bacon is still warm and the bread is crisp. Secure with toothpicks if needed.
