Ham and Cheese Sandwich
Classic deli-style sandwich with savory ham and melted cheese
Ingredients
Instructions
-
Prepare the spreadIn a small bowl, mix the mayonnaise and Dijon mustard until well combined. This creates a tangy spread that complements the ham and cheese beautifully.
-
Assemble the sandwichLay out the bread slices on a clean work surface. Spread the mustard-mayonnaise mixture evenly on all four slices. Layer two slices with equal amounts of ham, followed by the Swiss cheese, tomato slices, lettuce, and red onion if using.
-
Complete the sandwichesTop with the remaining bread slices, mustard-mayo side down. Gently press down to compact the sandwiches. If desired, sprinkle thyme leaves on the cheese before closing the sandwich for an aromatic touch.
-
Toast the sandwichesHeat a large skillet over medium heat. Lightly butter the outside of each sandwich. Place the sandwiches in the skillet and cook for 2-3 minutes per side, until the bread is golden brown and the cheese begins to melt. For a non-grilled version, skip this step.
-
ServeCut the sandwiches diagonally and serve immediately while warm and the cheese is still melty. Pair with a side of potato chips, pickle spears, or a light salad for a complete meal.
