Instructions

  1. Prepare the custard mixture
In a large, shallow bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until well combined and slightly frothy.
  2. Soak the bread
Place each slice of bread in the custard mixture, allowing it to soak for 30 seconds on each side. The bread should absorb the mixture but not become too soggy that it falls apart.
  3. Preheat the cooking surface
Heat a large non-stick skillet or griddle over medium heat. Add 1 tablespoon of butter and allow it to melt completely, coating the cooking surface evenly.
  4. Cook the French toast
Place 2-3 soaked bread slices onto the hot surface, being careful not to overcrowd the pan. Cook for 3-4 minutes on each side until golden brown and crispy on the edges. The center should be cooked through but still moist.
  5. Continue cooking in batches
Transfer the cooked French toast to a warming plate or oven set at 200°F (95°C) to keep warm. Add another tablespoon of butter to the pan and repeat the cooking process with the remaining slices of bread.
  6. Serve immediately
Arrange the French toast on plates, drizzle with maple syrup, add fresh berries if desired, and dust with powdered sugar. Serve hot while the exterior is still crispy.
