Instructions

  1. Prepare the baking dish
Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish with 1 tablespoon of butter. Spread the bread cubes evenly in the prepared dish.
  2. Caramelize the apples
In a large skillet, melt 3 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Add the apple pieces, 1/4 cup of brown sugar, and 1 teaspoon of cinnamon. Cook for 8-10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the apples are soft and caramelized. Spread the apple mixture evenly over the bread cubes.
  3. Prepare the custard mixture
In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, heavy cream, remaining 1/2 cup brown sugar, maple syrup, vanilla extract, remaining 1 teaspoon cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until well combined.
  4. Assemble the French toast
Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread and apples, pressing down gently to ensure all bread cubes are soaked. If using nuts, sprinkle them on top. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour or overnight for best results.
  5. Preheat and bake
When ready to bake, preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Remove the dish from the refrigerator and let it stand at room temperature while the oven preheats. Bake uncovered for 45-50 minutes, until the top is golden brown and the center is set.
  6. Serve
Let the baked French toast cool for 5-10 minutes before serving. Cut into squares and serve warm with additional maple syrup, a dusting of powdered sugar, or a dollop of whipped cream if desired.
