Instructions

  1. Prepare the baking dish
Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with butter. Arrange the bread cubes evenly in the prepared baking dish.
  2. Mix the custard
In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until well combined. Pour this mixture evenly over the bread cubes, making sure all pieces are coated.
  3. Refrigerate overnight
Cover the baking dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 8 hours or overnight. This allows the bread to absorb the custard mixture completely.
  4. Prepare the topping
In a medium bowl, combine the brown sugar, flour, and cinnamon. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry cutter or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in the chopped pecans if using. Refrigerate the topping until ready to bake.
  5. Preheat and prepare for baking
When ready to bake, remove the casserole from the refrigerator and let it sit at room temperature for about 30 minutes. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  6. Add topping and bake
Sprinkle the prepared topping evenly over the soaked bread mixture. Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until the casserole is puffed, golden brown, and set in the center.
  7. Rest before serving
Allow the casserole to cool for 5-10 minutes before serving. This helps it set up and makes it easier to portion.
  8. Serve and garnish
Cut into squares and serve warm with maple syrup and fresh berries. For an extra touch of indulgence, dust with powdered sugar just before serving.
