Patty Melt
Classic beef patty with melted cheese on grilled rye bread
Ingredients
Instructions
-
Prepare the pattiesIn a large bowl, combine ground beef, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until just combined, being careful not to overwork the meat. Divide into 4 equal portions and shape into oval patties that are slightly larger than the bread slices. Press a slight indentation in the center of each patty with your thumb to prevent it from puffing up during cooking.
-
Caramelize the onionsHeat a large skillet over medium heat. Add 2 tablespoons of butter and the sliced onions. Cook, stirring occasionally, for about 15-20 minutes until the onions are soft and caramelized to a golden brown. Season with a pinch of salt. Remove the onions from the skillet and set aside.
-
Cook the pattiesIn the same skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Cook the patties for about 3-4 minutes per side for medium doneness, or adjust to your preferred level of doneness. Transfer to a plate and cover loosely with foil to keep warm.
-
Butter the breadSpread butter on one side of each slice of rye bread. Place 4 slices, butter side down, on a clean work surface. Top each with a slice of Swiss cheese, followed by a cooked patty, a portion of caramelized onions, a slice of American cheese, another slice of Swiss cheese, and finally the remaining bread slices, butter side up.
-
Grill the sandwichesHeat the remaining tablespoon of oil in the skillet over medium heat. Working in batches if necessary, cook the sandwiches until the bread is golden brown and the cheese has melted, about 3-4 minutes per side. Press down gently with a spatula to help the sandwich hold together.
-
ServeCut the patty melts diagonally and serve immediately while the cheese is still gooey and the bread is crisp. Pair with dill pickle spears, french fries, or potato chips for a complete diner-style meal.
