Monte Cristo Sandwich
A decadent French-inspired sandwich with ham, cheese and jam
Ingredients
Instructions
-
Prepare the sandwichesLay out 8 slices of bread on a work surface. Spread each slice with about 1/2 tablespoon of Dijon mustard. Place a slice of Swiss cheese on 4 of the bread slices, then top each with 2 slices of ham, followed by another slice of Swiss cheese. Complete the sandwiches by placing the remaining 4 bread slices on top, mustard side down.
-
Make the batterIn a shallow bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt until well combined. The batter should be smooth and slightly frothy.
-
Dip and coatCarefully dip each sandwich into the egg mixture, allowing it to soak for about 30 seconds on each side. Make sure the bread is fully coated but not so saturated that it falls apart.
-
Cook the sandwichesHeat a large skillet over medium heat and melt 1 tablespoon of butter. Place one or two sandwiches in the skillet (depending on size) and cook until golden brown, about 3-4 minutes per side. Add more butter as needed for each batch. Keep cooked sandwiches warm in a 200°F oven while cooking the remaining sandwiches.
-
ServeCut each sandwich in half diagonally. Dust generously with powdered sugar and serve immediately with raspberry or strawberry jam on the side for dipping. For a classic presentation, insert a toothpick into each sandwich half.
