Instructions

  1. Prepare the hot dogs
Bring a pot of water to a simmer (not a rolling boil). Add hot dogs and simmer for about 5 minutes until heated through. Alternatively, grill or pan-fry with a little oil until lightly browned on all sides.
  2. Warm the buns
While the hot dogs are cooking, lightly toast the buns either in a toaster, on the grill, or in a dry skillet until just warmed and slightly crispy on the outside.
  3. Prepare the toppings
Warm the sauerkraut in a small saucepan over low heat. Dice the onions finely and set aside with the other condiments for serving.
  4. Assemble the hot dogs
Place each hot dog in a bun. For the classic New York style, spread a line of mustard down one side of the hot dog, then top with warm sauerkraut and diced onions. Add a sprinkle of garlic powder, salt, and pepper if desired.
  5. Serve immediately
Wrap the bottom half of each hot dog in a paper napkin or parchment paper for the authentic street vendor experience, and serve while hot. Provide additional condiments on the side for customization.
