Seattle-Style Hot Dog
Cream cheese and caramelized onions create this Northwest favorite
Ingredients
Instructions
-
Caramelize the onionsIn a large skillet over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the sliced onions and brown sugar, stirring to coat. Cook for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onions are deeply caramelized and golden brown. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
-
Prepare the cream cheeseIn a small bowl, combine the softened cream cheese with diced jalapeño (if using) and mix until smooth. Set aside at room temperature to keep it spreadable.
-
Cook the hot dogsHeat olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Add the hot dogs and cook until browned on all sides and heated through, about 5-7 minutes. Alternatively, grill the hot dogs for 5-6 minutes, turning occasionally until charred to your liking.
-
Toast the bunsLightly toast the hot dog buns in a toaster, under a broiler, or on the grill for about 30 seconds until just warmed and slightly crisp on the edges.
-
Assemble the Seattle dogsSpread a generous layer of cream cheese on the inside of each toasted bun. Place a hot dog in each bun, then top with caramelized onions. Add sauerkraut if using, and finish with a drizzle of sriracha or hot sauce if desired.
-
Serve immediatelyWrap each hot dog in parchment paper or serve on plates. The Seattle-style hot dog is best enjoyed while still warm with all the toppings melding together.
