Instructions

  1. Prepare the hot dogs
Using a sharp knife, score the hot dogs diagonally about 1/8-inch deep in a spiral pattern. This helps them cook evenly and creates pockets for flavors to settle into.
  2. Prepare the buns
Brush the inside of each hot dog bun with melted butter and sprinkle with garlic powder. Toast the buns lightly on a grill or in a skillet over medium heat until golden brown, about 1-2 minutes.
  3. Cook the hot dogs
Grill or pan-fry the hot dogs over medium-high heat, turning occasionally, until they're heated through and show grill marks, about 5-7 minutes.
  4. Prepare the sauerkraut
In a small saucepan, warm the drained sauerkraut over medium heat. Stir in the caraway seeds and cook for 2-3 minutes until fragrant and heated through.
  5. Assemble the hot dogs
Place each cooked hot dog in a toasted bun. Top each with a generous portion of the warm sauerkraut mixture, spreading it evenly along the length of the hot dog.
  6. Add the cheese and melt
Place a slice of Swiss cheese over the sauerkraut on each hot dog. If desired, place under a broiler for 30 seconds or cover with a lid on low heat until the cheese melts.
  7. Add final toppings
Drizzle spicy brown mustard over each hot dog. Sprinkle with diced onions and add sweet pickle relish according to taste preference.
  8. Serve and enjoy
Serve immediately while hot and the cheese is still melty. Provide extra napkins as these can be deliciously messy!
