Kansas City Hot Dog
Classic sauerkraut and melted Swiss cheese topped hot dog
Ingredients
Instructions
-
Prepare the hot dogsUsing a sharp knife, score the hot dogs diagonally about 1/8-inch deep in a spiral pattern. This helps them cook evenly and creates pockets for flavors to settle into.
-
Prepare the bunsBrush the inside of each hot dog bun with melted butter and sprinkle with garlic powder. Toast the buns lightly on a grill or in a skillet over medium heat until golden brown, about 1-2 minutes.
-
Cook the hot dogsGrill or pan-fry the hot dogs over medium-high heat, turning occasionally, until they're heated through and show grill marks, about 5-7 minutes.
-
Prepare the sauerkrautIn a small saucepan, warm the drained sauerkraut over medium heat. Stir in the caraway seeds and cook for 2-3 minutes until fragrant and heated through.
-
Assemble the hot dogsPlace each cooked hot dog in a toasted bun. Top each with a generous portion of the warm sauerkraut mixture, spreading it evenly along the length of the hot dog.
-
Add the cheese and meltPlace a slice of Swiss cheese over the sauerkraut on each hot dog. If desired, place under a broiler for 30 seconds or cover with a lid on low heat until the cheese melts.
-
Add final toppingsDrizzle spicy brown mustard over each hot dog. Sprinkle with diced onions and add sweet pickle relish according to taste preference.
-
Serve and enjoyServe immediately while hot and the cheese is still melty. Provide extra napkins as these can be deliciously messy!
