Combine dry ingredientsIn a medium bowl, whisk together the cocoa powder, sugar, and salt until well combined. If using cinnamon, add it here.

Heat the milkIn a medium saucepan, heat the milk over medium heat until it begins to steam and small bubbles form around the edges. Do not let it come to a full boil.

Create the chocolate baseAdd the dry ingredient mixture to the hot milk and whisk continuously until completely dissolved, about 1-2 minutes.

Melt the chocolateAdd the chopped chocolate to the saucepan and reduce heat to low. Whisk constantly until the chocolate is completely melted and the mixture is smooth and creamy.

Add flavorRemove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract. Taste and adjust sweetness if needed.

Serve and garnishPour the hot chocolate into mugs. Top with mini marshmallows, whipped cream, and chocolate shavings if desired. Serve immediately while hot.
