Instructions

  1. Prepare the patties
In a large bowl, gently combine the ground beef, salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce. Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and form into patties slightly larger than your buns, as they will shrink when cooking. Press your thumb gently into the center of each patty to create a small dimple - this prevents the burgers from puffing up during cooking.
  2. Preheat the grill or pan
Heat a grill, grill pan, or cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat. If using a pan, add a small amount of oil to prevent sticking.
  3. Cook the burgers
Place the patties on the hot surface and cook for 3-4 minutes on the first side. Flip once and cook for an additional 3-4 minutes for medium doneness, or until the internal temperature reaches 160°F (71°C). During the last minute of cooking, place a slice of cheese on each patty and cover briefly to melt the cheese.
  4. Toast the buns
While the patties are cooking, lightly toast the hamburger buns either on the grill (cut side down) for about 30 seconds, or in a toaster until golden brown.
  5. Prepare the sauce
In a small bowl, mix together mayonnaise, ketchup, and a touch of mustard to create a simple burger sauce. Alternatively, you can use the condiments separately.
  6. Assemble the burgers
Spread the sauce on both halves of the toasted buns. Place a lettuce leaf on the bottom bun, followed by the burger patty with melted cheese. Top with a slice of tomato and some red onion rings. Place the top bun on and serve immediately.
