Instructions

  1. Prepare the patties
In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper. Mix gently with your hands until just combined, being careful not to overwork the meat. Divide into 4 equal portions and form into patties slightly larger than your buns, as they will shrink during cooking. Press your thumb into the center of each patty to create a dimple (this prevents the burgers from puffing up during cooking).
  2. Preheat the grill
Preheat your grill or grill pan to medium-high heat. Lightly oil the grates to prevent sticking. If using a stovetop, heat a cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat with a touch of oil.
  3. Grill the burgers
Place the patties on the hot grill and cook for 4-5 minutes. Flip once and cook for another 3-4 minutes for medium doneness, or until the internal temperature reaches 160°F (71°C). During the last minute of cooking, brush the patties generously with BBQ sauce and top each with a slice of cheddar cheese. Cover briefly to allow the cheese to melt.
  4. Toast the buns
While the burgers are cooking, lightly toast the buns on the grill for about 30 seconds, cut side down, until they have light grill marks and are warm and slightly crispy.
  5. Assemble the burgers
Spread mayonnaise (if using) on the bottom half of each toasted bun. Add a layer of shredded lettuce, followed by a tomato slice. Place the cooked burger patty with melted cheese on top. Add two strips of crispy bacon, a few red onion rings, and a generous dollop of additional BBQ sauce. Top with the other half of the bun and serve immediately.
  6. Serve and enjoy
Serve the burgers hot with extra BBQ sauce on the side. Pair with french fries, coleslaw, or a simple green salad for a complete meal.
