-
Prepare the meatloaf mixtureIn a large bowl, combine the ground beef, Italian sausage, breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, beaten egg, diced onion, minced garlic, chopped basil, and Italian seasoning. Season with salt and pepper. Mix gently with your hands until just combined, being careful not to overmix.
-
Form and prepare the meatloafTransfer the meat mixture to a parchment-lined baking sheet and shape into a loaf approximately 9 inches long and 4 inches wide. Spread the marinara sauce over the top of the meatloaf.
-
Bake the meatloafPreheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the meatloaf for 1 hour or until the internal temperature reaches 160°F (71°C). Let it rest for 10 minutes before slicing.
-
Prepare the breadWhile the meatloaf is resting, slice the ciabatta rolls or Italian bread horizontally. Brush the inside of each half with olive oil. Place them cut-side up under the broiler for 1-2 minutes until lightly toasted.
-
Assemble the sandwichesSlice the meatloaf into 1/2-inch thick slices. Place 2-3 slices on the bottom half of each roll. Top with 2 slices of provolone cheese per sandwich.
-
Melt the cheeseReturn the assembled open-faced sandwiches to the broiler for 1-2 minutes, just until the cheese melts and begins to bubble.
-
Finish the sandwichesSpread additional warm marinara sauce on the top half of each roll. Close the sandwiches, cut in half diagonally, and serve immediately while still warm.
