Instructions

  1. Brew the hojicha
In a heatproof container, add the hojicha powder or tea bags to hot water (not boiling, around 175°F/80°C). Steep for 3 minutes, then remove tea bags if using. If using powder, whisk until completely dissolved.
  2. Sweeten the tea
While the tea is still warm, add your sweetener of choice (honey or maple syrup) and stir until completely dissolved. Add vanilla extract if using. Let the mixture cool to room temperature.
  3. Chill the mixture
Once cooled to room temperature, transfer the sweetened hojicha to the refrigerator for about 15-20 minutes until chilled. If you're in a hurry, you can skip this step, but your drink will be more diluted from the ice.
  4. Assemble the latte
Fill two tall glasses with ice cubes. Pour the chilled hojicha mixture evenly between the glasses, filling them about halfway.
  5. Add milk and serve
Slowly pour the cold milk into each glass, leaving about half an inch of space at the top. Gently stir to combine. If desired, top with whipped cream and dust with a small amount of hojicha powder for garnish.
