Danish Apple Cake
A delightful layered dessert of apple compote and sweet crumbs
Ingredients
Instructions
-
Prepare the apple compoteIn a large saucepan, combine the diced apples, granulated sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, water, and lemon juice. Cook over medium heat for about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the apples are soft but still hold their shape. Remove from heat and let cool completely.
-
Make the bread crumbsPreheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Place the bread cubes on a baking sheet and toast in the oven for 10 minutes until dry. In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the toasted bread cubes and brown sugar, stirring constantly until the bread is golden and caramelized, about 5-7 minutes. Let cool, then pulse in a food processor to make coarse crumbs.
-
Whip the creamIn a large bowl, whip the heavy cream with powdered sugar until soft peaks form. Be careful not to overwhip.
-
Assemble the cakeIn a trifle dish or glass serving bowl, create alternating layers starting with a third of the bread crumbs, followed by half of the apple compote. Repeat the layers, finishing with a layer of bread crumbs on top.
-
Finish and serveJust before serving, top the cake with the whipped cream and sprinkle with toasted almonds. For an authentic presentation, serve in individual glass dishes to showcase the beautiful layers.
