Ingredients
Instructions
-
Prepare the applesIn a large bowl, combine the sliced apples with granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, raisins (if using), chopped nuts, and lemon juice. Toss well to ensure all apple slices are coated with the mixture. Let stand for 15 minutes to release juices.
-
Prepare the workspacePreheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Clear a large work surface and lay a clean kitchen towel on it. Make sure you have all ingredients ready and within reach.
-
Layer the phyllo doughPlace one sheet of phyllo dough on the kitchen towel. Brush it lightly with melted butter. Place another sheet on top and brush with butter again. Repeat until all 8 sheets are stacked, buttering each layer except the top one.
-
Add the fillingSprinkle the toasted breadcrumbs evenly over the phyllo, leaving a 2-inch border around the edges. Drain any excess liquid from the apple mixture, then spread the filling evenly over the breadcrumbs, maintaining the border.
-
Roll the strudelUsing the kitchen towel as an aid, carefully roll the phyllo dough from the long side, enclosing the filling completely. Tuck in the ends and place the strudel seam-side down on the prepared baking sheet. Brush the top with remaining melted butter.
-
Bake the strudelUsing a sharp knife, make a few small slits on top of the strudel to allow steam to escape. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, until the pastry is golden brown and crisp.
-
ServeAllow the strudel to cool for 15 minutes before serving. Dust with powdered sugar just before serving. For an authentic experience, serve slices with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, or vanilla sauce.
