Instructions
-
Prepare the tofuDrain the tofu well and pat dry with paper towels. For a firmer texture, press the tofu for 30 minutes before cooking. Cut into 1-inch cubes and set aside.
-
Sear the tofuHeat vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add tofu cubes and cook until golden brown on all sides, about 5-7 minutes. Transfer to a plate and set aside.
-
Prepare the aromaticsIn the same pan, add a bit more oil if needed. Add minced garlic, julienned ginger, and white parts of green onions. Stir-fry for 30 seconds until fragrant. Add sliced red bell pepper and stir-fry for another 2 minutes.
-
Create the sauceAdd soy sauce, dark soy sauce, rice vinegar, brown sugar, and vegetable broth to the pan. Stir well to combine and bring to a gentle simmer.
-
Braise the tofuReturn the seared tofu to the pan. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 10-15 minutes, allowing the tofu to absorb the flavors of the sauce.
-
Thicken the sauceStir the cornstarch slurry to recombine, then add it to the pan. Gently stir until the sauce thickens, about 1-2 minutes. Be careful not to break the tofu.
-
Finish the dishDrizzle with sesame oil and garnish with the sliced green parts of the green onions. Serve hot with steamed rice.
