Warm spiced apples with a golden, buttery oat topping
Ingredients
Instructions
-
Preheat the ovenPreheat your oven to 180°C (350°F). Lightly grease a 9x13 inch baking dish or a 9-inch deep-dish pie plate with butter.
-
Prepare the apple fillingIn a large bowl, toss the sliced apples with lemon juice. In a small bowl, mix together the granulated sugar, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and cornstarch. Sprinkle this mixture over the apples and toss until evenly coated. Transfer the apple mixture to the prepared baking dish, spreading it out evenly.
-
Make the crumble toppingIn a medium bowl, combine the flour, rolled oats, brown sugar, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, and salt. Add the cold diced butter and use your fingers, a pastry cutter, or two forks to work the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs with some pea-sized pieces of butter remaining. If using nuts, fold them in now.
-
Assemble and bakeSprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the apple filling, covering the entire surface. Press down lightly to compact slightly. Place the baking dish on a rimmed baking sheet (to catch any potential overflow) and bake in the preheated oven for 40-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbling around the edges.
-
Cool and serveRemove from the oven and allow to cool for at least 15 minutes before serving. This allows the filling to set slightly. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, or custard if desired.
