Instructions

  1. Prepare the berries
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Wash and dry all berries. Hull and quarter strawberries if using, leaving smaller berries whole. Place berries in a large bowl.
  2. Create the berry filling
In a small bowl, mix granulated sugar and cornstarch. Sprinkle over berries, add lemon juice and vanilla extract, then gently toss until berries are evenly coated. Transfer to a 9-inch baking dish or pie plate.
  3. Make the crumble topping
In a medium bowl, combine flour, oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Add cold cubed butter and use your fingers or a pastry cutter to work the mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in chopped nuts if using.
  4. Assemble and bake
Sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the berry mixture. Place the baking dish on a sheet pan to catch any overflow. Bake for 30-35 minutes, until the topping is golden brown and the berry filling is bubbling around the edges.
  5. Cool and serve
Remove from oven and allow to cool for at least 15 minutes before serving. The crumble will thicken as it cools. Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream if desired.
