Instructions

  1. Prepare the fruit
Wash the apples and orange thoroughly. Core the apples and slice them thinly. Slice the orange into thin rounds. Set aside some slices for garnish if desired.
  2. Combine the liquids
In a large pot or slow cooker, combine the apple cider, orange juice, and lemon juice. Stir gently to mix the juices together.
  3. Add the spices
Add the cinnamon sticks, whole cloves, ground nutmeg, and ground ginger to the liquid mixture. If using honey or brown sugar, stir it in until completely dissolved.
  4. Simmer the wassail
Heat the mixture over medium-low heat until it just begins to simmer. Reduce heat to low, cover, and let it simmer for 30-40 minutes to allow the spices to infuse. Do not let it boil, as this can affect the flavor.
  5. Add the fruit
After simmering, add the sliced apples, orange slices, and cranberries (if using) to the pot. Allow to heat for an additional 5 minutes.
  6. Add alcohol (optional)
If making an adult version, stir in the brandy or rum just before serving. Do not boil after adding the alcohol as this will reduce the spirits' effect.
  7. Serve warm
Ladle the hot wassail into heat-resistant mugs or punch cups. Include some of the fruit in each serving if desired. Garnish with additional cinnamon sticks or orange slices.
