Sweet and tart holiday classic with fresh cranberries
Ingredients
Instructions
-
Prepare ingredientsRinse the cranberries under cold water and remove any stems or shriveled berries. Zest and juice the orange. Measure out all other ingredients and have them ready.
-
Make the baseIn a medium saucepan, combine water and sugar. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally until the sugar is completely dissolved, about 3-4 minutes.
-
Add cranberries and spicesAdd the cranberries, orange zest, orange juice, cinnamon stick, cloves, star anise (if using), and nutmeg to the saucepan. Return the mixture to a boil, then reduce heat to medium-low.
-
Simmer the sauceSimmer the mixture uncovered for about 10-12 minutes, stirring occasionally. The cranberries will begin to pop and the sauce will thicken. For a thicker sauce, cook longer; for a thinner sauce, cook for less time.
-
Finish and sweetenRemove from heat and stir in the maple syrup if using. Remove the cinnamon stick, cloves, and star anise pod. Taste and adjust sweetness if necessary by adding more sugar a tablespoon at a time while the sauce is still hot.
-
Cool and storeAllow the sauce to cool to room temperature. It will continue to thicken as it cools. Transfer to a serving dish or storage container. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving for flavors to fully develop.
