Instructions

  1. Prepare the bread
Lightly toast the bread slices if desired. Spread butter on one side of each bread slice, and mayonnaise on the other side. If using mustard, spread a thin layer on top of the mayonnaise on two of the slices.
  2. Layer the ingredients
On two of the bread slices (buttered side up), start layering ingredients. Begin with lettuce leaves as the first layer to prevent the bread from getting soggy. Then add sliced tomatoes, cucumber slices, ham, egg slices, avocado, and chicken breast. Season each layer lightly with salt and pepper as you go.
  3. Compress the sandwich
Place the remaining bread slices on top, with the mayonnaise side facing down. Gently press down on the sandwich to compact it slightly. Wrap each sandwich tightly in plastic wrap, making sure all sides are sealed.
  4. Set the sandwich
Place the wrapped sandwiches in the refrigerator with a light weight on top (like a small cutting board) for about 15-20 minutes. This helps the sandwich hold its shape and allows the flavors to meld together.
  5. Slice and serve
Remove the sandwiches from the refrigerator and unwrap. Using a sharp knife, carefully cut each sandwich in half diagonally, revealing the colorful layers inside. For a true Wanpaku style, you can cut the crusts off before slicing for a cleaner presentation.
