Instructions

  1. Brown the beef
Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and cook until browned, about 5-7 minutes, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon as it cooks. Drain excess fat, leaving about 1 tablespoon in the pan.
  2. Sauté the vegetables
Add the diced onion and green bell pepper to the skillet with the beef. Cook for 3-4 minutes until vegetables begin to soften. Add the minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds until fragrant.
  3. Add sauce ingredients
Stir in the tomato sauce, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, yellow mustard, chili powder, and paprika. Mix thoroughly to combine all ingredients with the meat mixture.
  4. Simmer the mixture
Reduce heat to low and simmer uncovered for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce has thickened to your desired consistency. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  5. Toast the buns
While the meat mixture is simmering, lightly toast the hamburger buns either in a toaster, under a broiler, or on a skillet until golden brown.
  6. Serve
Spoon the hot Sloppy Joe mixture onto the bottom halves of the toasted buns. Top with the other half of the bun and serve immediately with plenty of napkins.
