Ingredients
Instructions
-
Prepare the sweet potatoesPeel the sweet potatoes and cut them into 1-inch chunks. Place them in a large pot and cover with cold water by about 1 inch.
-
Boil until tenderAdd a pinch of salt to the water and bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce heat to medium and simmer until the sweet potatoes are very tender when pierced with a fork, about 15-20 minutes.
-
Drain and dryDrain the sweet potatoes thoroughly in a colander. Return them to the hot pot and let them sit for 1-2 minutes to allow excess moisture to evaporate.
-
Mash the potatoesAdd butter to the hot sweet potatoes and mash with a potato masher until mostly smooth. For a silkier texture, you can use a food processor or hand mixer, but be careful not to overmix.
-
Add flavoringsStir in the warm milk, maple syrup, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, vanilla extract, salt, and pepper. Mix until well combined and all ingredients are incorporated evenly.
-
Adjust seasoning and textureTaste and adjust seasoning as needed. If desired, add brown sugar for extra sweetness. If the mixture is too thick, add more warm milk, 1 tablespoon at a time, until you reach your desired consistency.
-
ServeTransfer to a serving bowl, add a pat of butter on top if desired, and serve hot. You can garnish with a sprinkle of cinnamon or chopped pecans for extra flavor and presentation.
