Instructions

  1. Prepare the sweet potatoes
Peel the sweet potatoes and cut them into 1-inch chunks. Place them in a large pot and cover with cold water by about 1 inch.
  2. Boil until tender
Add a pinch of salt to the water and bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce heat to medium and simmer until the sweet potatoes are very tender when pierced with a fork, about 15-20 minutes.
  3. Drain and dry
Drain the sweet potatoes thoroughly in a colander. Return them to the hot pot and let them sit for 1-2 minutes to allow excess moisture to evaporate.
  4. Mash the potatoes
Add butter to the hot sweet potatoes and mash with a potato masher until mostly smooth. For a silkier texture, you can use a food processor or hand mixer, but be careful not to overmix.
  5. Add flavorings
Stir in the warm milk, maple syrup, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, vanilla extract, salt, and pepper. Mix until well combined and all ingredients are incorporated evenly.
  6. Adjust seasoning and texture
Taste and adjust seasoning as needed. If desired, add brown sugar for extra sweetness. If the mixture is too thick, add more warm milk, 1 tablespoon at a time, until you reach your desired consistency.
  7. Serve
Transfer to a serving bowl, add a pat of butter on top if desired, and serve hot. You can garnish with a sprinkle of cinnamon or chopped pecans for extra flavor and presentation.
