Italian Sub Sandwich
A classic deli favorite packed with Italian meats and cheese
Ingredients
Instructions
-
Prepare the breadSlice the sub rolls or Italian bread loaf lengthwise, but not all the way through, so the halves remain attached. If desired, remove some of the soft interior bread to make room for fillings.
-
Make the dressingIn a small bowl, whisk together the olive oil, red wine vinegar, dried oregano, salt, and pepper until well combined. This creates the classic Italian sub dressing.
-
Layer the meats and cheeseDrizzle some of the dressing on both sides of the bread. Layer the meats in this order: salami, capicola, and mortadella. Fold each slice as you place it for better texture. Add the provolone cheese slices on top of the meats.
-
Add vegetablesLayer the thinly sliced red onion, tomato slices, shredded lettuce, and pickle or pepperoncini on top of the cheese. Make sure to distribute the vegetables evenly across the sandwich.
-
Finish the sandwichDrizzle the remaining dressing over the vegetables. Gently press down on the sandwich to compact it slightly. If making a large loaf, you can cut it into individual portions at this point.
-
Wrap and restFor the best flavor, wrap the sandwich tightly in parchment paper or aluminum foil and let it rest for 15-30 minutes before serving. This allows the flavors to meld together and the bread to absorb some of the dressing.
