Classic Cuban pressed sandwich with roasted pork and ham
Ingredients
Instructions
-
Prepare the breadSlice the Cuban bread or baguette pieces lengthwise, but don't cut all the way through. Open the bread like a book and spread mustard evenly on both sides of the interior.
-
Layer the ingredientsLayer the sandwich fillings in this order: ham, roasted pork, Swiss cheese, and pickle slices. Season with a little salt and pepper between layers for extra flavor.
-
Close and butterClose the sandwiches and spread the softened butter on the outside of each sandwich, both top and bottom. If using garlic, mix it with the butter before spreading for extra flavor.
-
Heat the pressHeat a sandwich press or large skillet over medium heat. If using a skillet, have a heavy pot or brick wrapped in foil ready to use as a weight.
-
Grill the sandwichPlace the sandwiches in the press or skillet. If using a skillet, place the weight on top of the sandwiches. Press down firmly to flatten the sandwiches to about 1/3 of their original height.
-
Cook until goldenGrill the sandwiches until the bread is crispy and golden brown and the cheese is melted, about 3-4 minutes per side if using a skillet, or 5-6 minutes total in a sandwich press.
-
Slice and serveRemove the sandwiches from the heat, let rest for 1 minute, then slice diagonally and serve immediately while hot and crispy.
