Classic Grilled Cheese
Crispy, golden bread with gooey melted cheese inside
Ingredients
Instructions
-
Prepare the breadLay out the bread slices on a clean work surface. Spread the outer sides of each slice with softened butter, making sure to cover the entire surface evenly. If using mayonnaise for extra crispiness, spread it on the outside of the bread instead of butter.
-
Add seasoningIf using, sprinkle the garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper onto the buttered sides of the bread. For added flavor, spread a thin layer of Dijon mustard on the inside of one slice of each sandwich.
-
Assemble the sandwichWith the buttered sides facing outward, place a layer of grated cheddar cheese on one slice of bread, followed by a slice of American cheese, and then another layer of cheddar. This combination creates the perfect melt and stretch. Top with the second slice of bread, buttered side up.
-
Grill the sandwichHeat a non-stick skillet or griddle over medium-low heat. Once hot, place the assembled sandwich in the pan. Cook for 3-4 minutes until the bottom side is golden brown and crispy, pressing down gently with a spatula occasionally.
-
Flip and finish cookingCarefully flip the sandwich over and cook for another 3-4 minutes until the second side is golden brown and the cheese is completely melted. If the bread is browning too quickly before the cheese melts, reduce the heat and cover the pan with a lid for a minute to help the cheese melt without burning the bread.
-
Serve immediatelyRemove the grilled cheese from the pan and let it rest for 1 minute. This allows the cheese to set slightly so it doesn't ooze out completely when you cut it. Slice diagonally and serve hot, alongside tomato soup if desired.
