Biscuits and Gravy Casserole
Classic Southern comfort food transformed into a hearty casserole
Ingredients
Instructions
-
Prepare the casserole dishPreheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with cooking spray or butter.
-
Cook the sausageIn a large skillet over medium-high heat, cook the breakfast sausage, breaking it up with a wooden spoon until it's fully browned and no longer pink, about 8-10 minutes. Do not drain the fat as it will help create the gravy.
-
Make the gravyReduce heat to medium and sprinkle flour over the cooked sausage. Stir constantly for 2 minutes to cook the flour. Gradually add the milk, stirring continuously to prevent lumps. Add salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and dried thyme. Bring to a simmer and cook for 5-7 minutes until the gravy thickens to coat the back of a spoon.
-
Prepare the biscuitsOpen the cans of biscuits and cut each biscuit into quarters. Place half of the biscuit pieces in an even layer in the prepared baking dish. Pour half of the sausage gravy over the biscuits and sprinkle with 1/2 cup of shredded cheddar cheese.
-
Assemble the casseroleLayer the remaining biscuit pieces on top of the cheese. Pour the remaining gravy evenly over the second layer of biscuits. Sprinkle with the remaining 1/2 cup of cheddar cheese. Brush the melted butter over the top of the casserole.
-
Bake the casseroleCover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake for 20 minutes. Remove the foil and continue baking for an additional 10-15 minutes until the biscuits are golden brown and the casserole is bubbling around the edges.
-
Rest and serveAllow the casserole to rest for 5 minutes before serving. This helps the gravy set slightly. Garnish with fresh chopped parsley and serve warm.
