Instructions

  1. Combine the ingredients
In a small saucepan, combine the milk, ground turmeric, cinnamon, ginger, black pepper, and cardamom. If using, add the coconut oil or ghee at this stage.
  2. Heat the mixture
Place the saucepan over medium-low heat and whisk the ingredients together. Heat the mixture gently, stirring frequently to prevent the milk from scalding or forming a skin on top.
  3. Simmer gently
Once the milk is warm but not boiling (small bubbles will form around the edges), reduce the heat to low and simmer for 5-10 minutes to allow the flavors to meld together. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.
  4. Add sweetener and vanilla
Remove the saucepan from heat and stir in the honey or maple syrup and vanilla extract. Adjust sweetness to taste.
  5. Strain and serve
Pour the turmeric milk through a fine-mesh strainer into mugs to remove any undissolved spices or fresh ginger pieces. Garnish with a sprinkle of cinnamon or a star anise pod if desired. Serve hot.
