Instructions

  1. Prepare the oat mixture
In a large mixing bowl, combine the rolled oats, softened butter, granulated sugar, and cocoa powder. Mix thoroughly until well combined and the butter is evenly distributed.
  2. Add flavorings
Pour in the vanilla extract, cold coffee, and salt. Mix again until the mixture becomes a thick, sticky dough. If the mixture seems too dry, add a little more coffee, one teaspoon at a time.
  3. Chill the dough
Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 15-30 minutes. This will make the mixture easier to handle and shape into balls.
  4. Shape into balls
Remove the chilled mixture from the refrigerator. Using your hands, roll the mixture into small balls about 3 cm (1.2 inches) in diameter. Work quickly as the heat from your hands will soften the mixture.
  5. Coat the balls
Place the desiccated coconut or chocolate sprinkles in a shallow dish. Roll each ball in the coating of your choice until completely covered. For variety, you can use different coatings for different balls.
  6. Final decoration
If using pearl sugar, gently press a few pieces into the top of each ball for decoration. This step is optional but adds a traditional Swedish touch.
  7. Store and serve
Place the finished chocolate balls in an airtight container and refrigerate for at least 1 hour before serving. They can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 1 week or frozen for up to 3 months.
