A fragrant, sweet bread perfect for coffee time
Ingredients
Instructions
-
Prepare the doughIn a large bowl, mix 2 cups of flour with sugar, yeast, salt, and cardamom. Add warm milk, melted butter, and 1 beaten egg. Mix until smooth, then gradually add remaining flour until a soft dough forms.
-
Knead the doughTurn dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
-
Prepare the fillingWhile the dough is rising, mix softened butter with brown sugar, cardamom, and cinnamon until well combined. Set aside at room temperature.
-
Shape the breadPunch down the dough and roll it out on a floured surface into a large rectangle about 16x12 inches. Spread the cardamom-butter mixture evenly over the dough, leaving a 1/2-inch border.
-
Create the classic twistStarting from the long edge, roll the dough tightly into a log. Use a sharp knife to cut the log in half lengthwise, leaving one end attached. Twist the two halves together with the cut sides facing up, then form into a ring or an 'S' shape on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
-
Second riseCover the shaped dough with a clean kitchen towel and let rise for another 30-45 minutes until puffy. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
-
Bake to golden perfectionBeat the remaining egg and brush it over the bread. Sprinkle with pearl sugar and sliced almonds if using. Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom. Cover with foil if it browns too quickly.
-
Cool and serveTransfer to a wire rack and let cool for at least 15 minutes before slicing. Serve warm or at room temperature with coffee or tea.
