Instructions

  1. Brown the meat
Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and cook until browned, about 5-7 minutes, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon as it cooks. Drain excess fat, leaving about 1 tablespoon in the pan.
  2. Sauté the vegetables
Add the diced onion, bell pepper, and garlic to the skillet with the beef. Cook until vegetables are softened, about 4-5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  3. Add the sauce ingredients
Stir in the ketchup, brown sugar, yellow mustard, Worcestershire sauce, tomato paste, chili powder, salt, and pepper. Mix thoroughly to combine all ingredients.
  4. Simmer the mixture
Reduce heat to low and simmer for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the mixture has thickened to your desired consistency. If it becomes too thick, add a tablespoon or two of water.
  5. Toast the buns
While the mixture is simmering, lightly toast the hamburger buns in a toaster or under a broiler until golden brown.
  6. Serve
Spoon the hot Sloppy Joe mixture onto the bottom halves of the toasted buns, and cover with the top halves. Serve immediately with plenty of napkins.
