Sloppy Joes
Classic American ground beef sandwich with tangy tomato sauce
Ingredients
Instructions
-
Brown the meatHeat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and cook until browned, about 5-7 minutes, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon as it cooks. Drain excess fat, leaving about 1 tablespoon in the pan.
-
Sauté the vegetablesAdd the diced onion, bell pepper, and garlic to the skillet with the beef. Cook until vegetables are softened, about 4-5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
-
Add the sauce ingredientsStir in the ketchup, brown sugar, yellow mustard, Worcestershire sauce, tomato paste, chili powder, salt, and pepper. Mix thoroughly to combine all ingredients.
-
Simmer the mixtureReduce heat to low and simmer for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the mixture has thickened to your desired consistency. If it becomes too thick, add a tablespoon or two of water.
-
Toast the bunsWhile the mixture is simmering, lightly toast the hamburger buns in a toaster or under a broiler until golden brown.
-
ServeSpoon the hot Sloppy Joe mixture onto the bottom halves of the toasted buns, and cover with the top halves. Serve immediately with plenty of napkins.
