Ingredients
Instructions
-
Prepare the fillingIn a large bowl, combine ground pork, chopped shrimp (if using), green onions, minced carrots, garlic, fish sauce, and black pepper. Mix thoroughly until all ingredients are well incorporated.
-
Form the dumplingsPlace a teaspoon of the filling in the center of each wonton wrapper. Moisten the edges with water, then fold the wrapper in half to form a triangle, pressing the edges to seal. Bring the two corners together and press to seal, forming a small pouch. Repeat with remaining wrappers and filling.
-
Prepare the broth baseIn a large pot, heat vegetable oil over medium heat. Add diced onion and sauté until translucent, about 3-4 minutes. Pour in the chicken broth and bring to a gentle boil. Add 2 tablespoons of fish sauce and season with salt and pepper to taste.
-
Cook the dumplingsGently drop the dumplings into the simmering broth, being careful not to overcrowd the pot. Work in batches if necessary. Cook for about 5-7 minutes or until the dumplings float to the surface and the filling is cooked through.
-
Add final touchesTaste the broth and adjust seasoning if needed with additional fish sauce, salt, or pepper. Reduce heat to low and allow the soup to simmer for another 5 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
-
Serve the soupLadle the hot soup with dumplings into individual bowls. Garnish generously with chopped green onions, fried garlic bits, and fresh cilantro. Serve immediately while hot.
