Instructions

  1. Prepare the buns
Pour water into a pot with a steamer basket and bring to a simmer. Place the hot dog buns in the steamer basket and steam for about 2 minutes until warm and soft. Remove and set aside.
  2. Cook the hot dogs
Fill a pot with enough water to cover the hot dogs. Add salt and bring to a simmer. Add the hot dogs and cook for about 3-4 minutes until heated through. Be careful not to boil vigorously as this can cause the casings to split.
  3. Prepare the toppings
While the hot dogs are cooking, prepare all your toppings. Finely dice the raw onion and set aside. Have the remoulade sauce, sweet brown mustard, ketchup, and crispy fried onions ready in separate bowls for assembly.
  4. Assemble the hot dogs
Place each hot dog in a steamed bun. For the authentic Icelandic experience, add the toppings in this order: remoulade sauce on the bottom, then add the hot dog, top with sweet brown mustard, ketchup, diced raw onions, and finish with a generous sprinkle of crispy fried onions.
  5. Serve immediately
Wrap the bottom half of each hot dog in a napkin or paper (as they do in Iceland) and serve immediately while everything is still warm. The contrast between the warm hot dog and the cool toppings is essential to the authentic experience.
