Instructions

  1. Prepare the dough
In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, and salt. In a separate bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm milk, then add melted butter and egg. Gradually mix the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients until a soft dough forms.
  2. Knead the dough
Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  3. Prepare the filling
While the dough is rising, mix together the brown sugar, cinnamon, and cardamom (if using) in a small bowl. Set aside.
  4. Shape the buns
Punch down the risen dough and roll it out on a floured surface into a large rectangle, approximately 16x12 inches. Spread the softened butter evenly over the dough, then sprinkle with the cinnamon-sugar mixture, leaving a 1/2-inch border around the edges.
  5. Roll and cut
Starting from the long edge, tightly roll the dough into a log. Using a sharp knife or dental floss, cut the log into 12 equal pieces. Place the rolls cut-side up in a greased baking dish or on a baking sheet, leaving space between each roll.
  6. Second rise
Cover the rolls with a damp cloth and let rise for another 30 minutes until puffy. Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  7. Bake the buns
Bake in the preheated oven for 15-18 minutes, or until golden brown. Remove from the oven and let cool slightly while preparing the glaze.
  8. Glaze and serve
Whisk together confectioners' sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth. Drizzle the glaze over the warm cinnamon buns and serve immediately for the best taste and texture.
