Genmaicha Brown Rice Tea
A nutty, toasty Japanese green tea with roasted brown rice
Ingredients
Instructions
-
Heat the waterHeat filtered water to 175°F (80°C). The temperature is crucial - water that's too hot will make the tea bitter. Remove from heat once it reaches the correct temperature.
-
Warm the teapotPour a small amount of the heated water into your teapot, swirl it around to warm the pot, then discard the water. This helps maintain the brewing temperature.
-
Add the tea leavesAdd 4 tablespoons of genmaicha tea leaves to the warmed teapot. If using extra toasted brown rice for a stronger nutty flavor, add it now.
-
Steep the teaPour the hot water over the tea leaves and steep for 2-3 minutes. Avoid steeping longer as it can make the tea bitter. The color should be a pale yellow-green with a nutty aroma.
-
Strain and serveStrain the tea into cups, distributing evenly to ensure each cup has the same strength. The tea should have a light golden-green color and a distinctive toasty aroma.
-
Add optional ingredientsIf desired, add a small amount of honey to taste, though traditionally genmaicha is enjoyed without sweeteners. Garnish with a small lemon peel if using.
