Instructions

  1. Heat the water
Heat filtered water to approximately 80-85°C (175-185°F). This temperature is ideal for Genmaicha as it helps preserve the delicate flavors without extracting too much bitterness from the green tea leaves. Avoid using boiling water as it can make the tea taste bitter.
  2. Prepare the teapot
Warm your teapot by rinsing it with hot water, then discard the water. Add the Genmaicha tea leaves to the pot, using approximately 1 tablespoon per cup of water. If using optional ginger or cinnamon stick, add them now.
  3. Steep the tea
Pour the heated water over the tea leaves and cover the teapot. Allow the tea to steep for 2-3 minutes. The roasted rice will impart a nutty, toasted flavor to the green tea. Longer steeping times will result in a stronger flavor, but may also increase bitterness.
  4. Strain and serve
Gently stir the tea once before straining it into individual cups. If using honey for sweetness, add a small amount to each cup according to taste preferences. Garnish with optional lemon slice and toasted sesame seeds if desired.
  5. Enjoy mindfully
Serve immediately while hot. Take a moment to appreciate the golden-green color and the unique aroma of the roasted rice before sipping. Genmaicha is traditionally enjoyed without milk.
