Instructions

  1. Prepare the beans
If using dried adzuki beans, soak them overnight. Drain, then cook in fresh water with sugar until tender, about 45 minutes. Allow to cool completely. If using canned beans, drain and sweeten to taste.
  2. Prepare the other ingredients
Open and drain all canned or jarred ingredients (nata de coco, jackfruit, kaong, macapuno). Cut the leche flan into small cubes. Set all ingredients aside in separate bowls.
  3. Assemble the base layer
In tall glasses or bowls, add 1-2 tablespoons each of sweetened beans, nata de coco, jackfruit, kaong, macapuno, and sweet corn to create the base layer.
  4. Add the shaved ice
Fill each glass or bowl with shaved ice, packing it gently to form a dome on top.
  5. Pour the condensed milk
Drizzle about 1/4 cup of sweetened condensed milk over the ice in each serving, allowing it to seep through the ice.
  6. Add the toppings
Place a scoop of ube ice cream on top of each serving. Arrange slices of leche flan around the ice cream. Sprinkle with crushed rice krispies (pinipig).
  7. Serve immediately
Provide long spoons and straws so guests can mix all ingredients together before eating - this is where the name 'halo-halo' (mix-mix) comes from. Enjoy immediately before the ice melts.
