Instructions

  1. Prepare the coffee filters
Place the Vietnamese coffee filters (phin) over two heat-resistant coffee cups or glasses. Add 2 tablespoons of ground coffee to each filter and gently press down with the filter's press.
  2. Add condensed milk and salt
Add 1 tablespoon of condensed milk and 1/8 teaspoon of fine sea salt to each cup before placing the filter on top. You can also add the optional vanilla extract at this stage if desired.
  3. Pour hot water
Pour about 2 tablespoons of hot water into each filter to allow the coffee grounds to bloom for about 30 seconds. Then slowly add the remaining hot water, dividing it between the two filters.
  4. Let coffee drip
Allow the coffee to slowly drip through the filter, which should take about 4-5 minutes. The slow extraction process is essential for developing the rich flavor profile that makes Vietnamese coffee special.
  5. Mix and serve
Once all the coffee has dripped through, remove the filters and stir well to combine the coffee with the condensed milk and salt mixture. For hot coffee, serve immediately. For iced coffee, add ice cubes to a new glass and pour the coffee mixture over the ice.
