Instructions

  1. Prepare the oven and baking dish
Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9-inch square baking dish or a 10-inch round pie dish with butter or cooking spray.
  2. Prepare the berry filling
In a large bowl, gently combine all the berries. In a small bowl, whisk together the granulated sugar and cornstarch. Sprinkle this mixture over the berries along with the lemon juice and zest. Toss gently to coat all the berries without crushing them. Transfer the berry mixture to the prepared baking dish and spread evenly.
  3. Make the crumble topping
In a medium bowl, combine the rolled oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Add the cold cubed butter and use your fingers or a pastry cutter to work the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs with some pea-sized pieces of butter remaining.
  4. Assemble and bake the crumble
Sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the berry mixture, covering it completely. Place the baking dish on a rimmed baking sheet to catch any bubble-over juices. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, until the topping is golden brown and the berry filling is bubbling around the edges.
  5. Cool and serve
Allow the crumble to cool for at least 15 minutes before serving. This gives the filling time to set slightly. Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream if desired.
