Instructions

  1. Prepare the plantains
In a large pot, boil the plantain chunks in salted water for about 15 minutes or until they're fork-tender but still firm. Drain and let cool slightly.
  2. Make the patacones
Flatten each plantain chunk using a tostonera (plantain press) or the bottom of a heavy glass between two pieces of plastic wrap until they're about 1/4 inch thick and 4-5 inches in diameter. You'll need 8 total to make 4 burgers.
  3. Fry the patacones
Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Fry the flattened plantains for 2-3 minutes per side until golden and crispy. Remove to paper towels and sprinkle lightly with salt while hot.
  4. Prepare the beef patties
Mix ground beef with garlic powder, onion powder, 1 teaspoon salt, and black pepper. Form into 4 patties slightly larger than the patacones, as they will shrink when cooking.
  5. Cook the burgers
Cook beef patties in a hot skillet or grill for about 4 minutes per side for medium doneness. Add cheese on top during the last minute of cooking to melt.
  6. Assemble the burgers
Place a patacon on a plate, add a dollop of pink sauce, then layer with shredded cabbage, beef patty with cheese, tomato slices, and avocado. Top with another patacon to create your burger.
