Instructions

  1. Prepare the spices
Place the cinnamon sticks, cloves, star anise, and allspice berries in a small cheesecloth bag or spice infuser if available. This makes it easier to remove them later, but you can add them directly to the cider if preferred.
  2. Combine ingredients
In a large pot or slow cooker, pour in the apple cider or juice. Add the spice bag, sliced orange, lemon, ginger, and nutmeg. If using maple syrup or brown sugar for additional sweetness, add it now.
  3. Heat the cider
Warm the cider mixture over medium-low heat until it just reaches a simmer, about 15 minutes. Do not allow it to boil, as this can make the cider bitter and reduce its flavor.
  4. Infuse the flavors
Once the cider reaches a simmer, reduce heat to low and continue to cook for an additional 10-15 minutes to allow the flavors to fully infuse. The longer it simmers, the stronger the spice flavor will become.
  5. Add alcohol (optional)
If using alcohol, remove the cider from heat and stir in the brandy or bourbon just before serving. Never add alcohol while the cider is on the heat source.
  6. Serve and garnish
Remove the spice bag and strain the cider if desired. Ladle the hot mulled cider into heat-resistant mugs. Garnish each serving with a fresh cinnamon stick and a slice of orange if desired.
