Cream butter and sugarIn a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter and granulated sugar with an electric mixer on medium speed until light and fluffy, about 5 minutes. This step incorporates air into the batter, which helps the cake rise properly.

Add eggs and vanillaAdd eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed. Mix in the vanilla extract until fully incorporated.

Combine dry ingredientsIn a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt until evenly distributed.

Alternate wet and dry ingredientsAdd the dry ingredients to the butter mixture in three parts, alternating with the milk (beginning and ending with the flour mixture). Mix on low speed just until combined after each addition, being careful not to overmix.

Create chocolate batterTransfer about one-third of the batter to a separate bowl. Mix the cocoa powder with 2 tablespoons of milk until smooth, then fold this mixture into the separated batter until fully incorporated with no streaks remaining.
