Cook the hot dogsWhile the sauerkraut is simmering, prepare the hot dogs. You can cook them by grilling, pan-frying, or simmering in water. For grilling or pan-frying, cook for 5-7 minutes, turning occasionally, until they are heated through and have nice grill marks or browning. For simmering, bring a pot of water to a gentle simmer (not boiling), add the hot dogs, and cook for about 5 minutes.

Warm the bunsLightly toast the hot dog buns in a toaster, under the broiler, or on the grill for about 30 seconds to 1 minute. Watch them closely to prevent burning. You want them warm and slightly crisp on the outside but still soft inside.

Assemble the hot dogsPlace each cooked hot dog in a warmed bun. Spread your choice of yellow or whole grain mustard inside the bun. Top each hot dog with a generous portion of the prepared sauerkraut mixture, allowing some to spill over the sides. Add ketchup if desired, though traditionalists often skip this on sauerkraut dogs.
