Instructions

  1. Prepare the miso glaze
In a small bowl, whisk together the miso paste, honey, rice vinegar, soy sauce, and vegetable oil until smooth and well combined. This creates the sweet-savory glaze that will caramelize beautifully on the plums.
  2. Infuse the glaze
In a small saucepan, gently heat the miso glaze mixture with the star anise and sliced ginger over low heat for about 3 minutes. Don't allow it to boil, just warm enough to infuse the flavors. Remove from heat and let steep for 5 minutes, then strain out the star anise and ginger.
  3. Prepare the plums
Preheat your grill to medium-high heat or use a grill pan on the stove. Lightly brush the cut sides of the plums with a little vegetable oil to prevent sticking.
  4. Grill the plums
Place the plums cut-side down on the grill. Cook for about 3 minutes until grill marks appear and the plums begin to soften slightly. Turn the plums over and brush the cut sides generously with the miso glaze.
  5. Finish grilling
Continue grilling for another 2-3 minutes until the glaze caramelizes and the plums are tender but still hold their shape. Be careful not to overcook or they will become mushy.
  6. Serve and garnish
Transfer the grilled plums to a serving plate, drizzle with any remaining glaze, and sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds. Garnish with fresh mint leaves and serve warm, either on their own or with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or Greek yogurt if desired.
