Dutch Apple Crumble
A warm, spiced apple dessert with a crunchy streusel topping
Ingredients
Instructions
-
Prepare the applesIn a large bowl, toss the sliced apples with lemon juice to prevent browning. Add granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and cornstarch. Mix thoroughly until all apple slices are evenly coated with the spice mixture.
-
Prepare the crumble toppingIn a medium bowl, combine flour, brown sugar, and salt. Add the cold cubed butter and work it into the flour mixture using your fingertips or a pastry cutter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in the rolled oats and mix until just combined.
-
Assemble the crumblePreheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Transfer the apple mixture to a 9x13 inch baking dish or a deep pie dish, spreading it evenly. Sprinkle the crumble topping over the apples, covering them completely.
-
Bake the crumblePlace the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbling around the edges. If the topping browns too quickly, cover loosely with aluminum foil.
-
Cool and serveRemove from the oven and let cool for at least 15 minutes before serving. The crumble is delicious served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.
