Instructions

  1. Prepare the citrus
Zest and juice the oranges, being careful to avoid the bitter white pith when zesting. Set aside the juice and zest separately.
  2. Combine ingredients
In a medium saucepan, combine the cranberries, sugar, orange juice, orange zest, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, and cinnamon stick (if using). Stir to mix well.
  3. Cook the sauce
Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce heat to medium-low and simmer, stirring occasionally, for about 10-12 minutes until most of the cranberries have burst and the sauce has thickened.
  4. Finish the sauce
Remove from heat and stir in the lemon juice and Grand Marnier (if using). Remove the cinnamon stick. The sauce will continue to thicken as it cools.
  5. Cool and store
Let the sauce cool completely at room temperature. Transfer to an airtight container and refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving to allow flavors to meld. The sauce can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 10 days.
