Instructions

  1. Prepare the dough
In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, yeast, and salt. Gradually add warm milk while stirring. Add softened butter and knead until you have a smooth, elastic dough, about 8-10 minutes. Cover with a damp cloth and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size, approximately 1 hour.
  2. Make the coconut filling
While the dough is rising, prepare the filling. In a medium bowl, mix together the softened butter, powdered sugar, milk powder, and shredded coconut until well combined. The mixture should be thick but spreadable. Set aside.
  3. Shape the buns
After the dough has doubled in size, punch it down to release air bubbles. Divide the dough into 10-12 equal portions. Roll each portion into a ball, then flatten into a 4-inch circle. Place about 1-2 tablespoons of the coconut filling in the center of each circle.
  4. Form the buns
Bring the edges of the dough up and over the filling, pinching to seal completely. Place the bun seam-side down on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Repeat with the remaining dough. Allow the buns to rise again for 30 minutes until puffy.
  5. Prepare for baking
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Gently brush the tops of the buns with beaten egg. If desired, sprinkle with sesame seeds for decoration and added flavor.
  6. Bake the buns
Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until the buns are golden brown. Remove from the oven and transfer to a wire rack to cool slightly before serving.
