Baked French Toast Casserole
Decadent breakfast casserole with a crispy cinnamon-sugar top
Ingredients
Instructions
-
Prepare the baking dishGrease a 9x13-inch baking dish with butter. Place the bread cubes evenly in the prepared baking dish.
-
Make the custard mixtureIn a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until well combined. Pour this mixture evenly over the bread cubes, making sure all pieces are soaked. Press down gently to help absorption.
-
Prepare the streusel toppingIn a medium bowl, combine the brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, and salt for the topping. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry cutter or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Cover and refrigerate until ready to use.
-
Refrigerate overnightCover the baking dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 3 hours or overnight. This allows the bread to fully absorb the egg mixture.
-
Preheat and prepare for bakingWhen ready to bake, preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Remove the casserole from the refrigerator and let it sit at room temperature for about 20 minutes. Sprinkle the streusel topping evenly over the soaked bread.
-
Bake the casseroleBake uncovered in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the center is set but still slightly jiggly. If the top browns too quickly, cover loosely with aluminum foil.
-
Rest before servingRemove from the oven and let the casserole rest for 10 minutes before serving. This allows it to set completely and makes it easier to cut into portions.
-
Serve and garnishServe warm with maple syrup, fresh berries, and a dusting of powdered sugar if desired. Cut into squares and enjoy!
